Waqwaq Style, origins of which could be traced back as early as 11th century, is a decorative style that was utilized on a vast geography and different societies. In addition, the style was utilized on a myriad of decorative art branches such as glassware, tiling, weaving, metal-ware, wood decoration, and architectural stone decoration. This paper based on the position of Waqwaq Style on the book arts such as illumination, miniature and cover. The key features of the style have been tried to reveal by analysis of different patterns and motifs of selected samples. The figures of the Waqwaq style are the product of a surrealistic point of view and consist of heads of humans, animals, fictitious animals, whose motifs depicted semi-stylized, reconstructed with only their heads, and were placed on a scroll. The close similarity between Waqwaq Style and Waqwaq tree is supporting the idea that the style has been derivative of the legendary tree. The imaginary motifs are depicted from the points of frontal, profile and bird's-eye view. Since the Waqwaq style was adopted to scroll system, the composition is appropriate with free, symmetric and raport rules. Because of the maturity of the earliest sample of the Waqwaq style, which dates back to 11th century, we think that the style should be used in earlier period. It is important for us that in the three different manuscripts written in the 16th century, the name is “waq” passed between the arts of illumination style names. Various works, decorated with Waqwaq style, are found in many museums, libraries and private collections like Topkapı Palace Museum Library, Metropolitan Museum, Paris National Library, British Museum, Chester Beatty Library, Harvard Art Museum, Austrian National Library, Khalili Collection. These are literary works such as shahnama, diwan, anthropology and scientific works such as astronomy, astrology, geometry, medicine. Because of their motifs, they were not used on the ornaments of religious manuscripts.
